Video Mapping & Projector Effects for Clubs & Bars

January 26th, 2010

The technology behind video mapping has been around for many years, but as technology has improved it is becoming more and more accessible and affordable, resulting in an increased range of market applications. Where before, it was only within the reach of large productions, TV shows and concerts, we can now offer simple to use systems for almost any venue including nightclubs, bars, pubs and restaurants.

The principal behind video mapping is fairly simple. A number of computer controlled video projector effects are used to project an image on to a desired surface. The projection surface is then mapped into the computer. We can then define various points from the surface and store these into the computer, giving us a selection of ?maps?. These maps can then be layered with video content, still images, live video feeds, logos, branding etc, to create an ?interactive? surface.

For example; imagine a Moroccan style venue with a large wooden carving mounted to the wall. We can use the mapping software to pick our individual parts of the carving such as the outer edge, inner beams, carved patterns etc. Once these are stored we can incorporate the video clips and layers so that when we project onto the carving, there is not spill of light over the edges. Plus different programs could be created so that each wooden beam on the carving would flash in sequence, the venue logo can be projected to grow out of a carved pattern, flowers and vines can grow out of the crevices on the carving. The possibilities are endless.

Any surface can be mapped and projected on, bringing it to life. The flexibility of the projectors means that any size object or surface can be used. From bar back shelves in a pub or club, to columns and periodic architrave in a hotel, video mapping is an ideal way to add a simple but very effective and unique lighting feature to you venue.

You can also see a short video of the video mapping computer controlled projector effects on YouTube.

Organizers Print Wall Maps for Business

January 23rd, 2010

Now that you ve set up your retail space or your campaign office, you are finally in business. But you have some questions. Like where are your customers And how do you reach them And what neighborhoods do you drop leaflets in You want to know where to knock on doors And you definitely want to know how to harness your current customer base to attract new customers.

Get a wall map. Not one of that world maps with a picture of a panda in China and a camel across the Sahara. Get a wall map relevant to your business district.

Or your campaign district. Most political organizers understand how vital a wall map is for a winning campaign I know Ive been through my share of them, but few business people have caught on to how their strategy could be made more effective through a wall map visualization. I talked to Kent Hargesheimer of Geo Printer, a wall map printing company. Here are five reasons he cites that your business could use a wall map

1. You have people delivering pizzas or crown jewels, political flyers or newspapers Let your staff instantly find where they are going. Wall maps are ideal for deciding where to go before leaving the store or depot.

2. Wall maps help you plan. You can plot where the competition is, where your customers are…in fact, you can do entire SWOT strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats analysis based on geography. If you plot demographic data, such as you might find at Catosphere Demographics, you could easily see where your best target customers are located.

3. Wall maps can help you define delivery or sales territories to maximize revenues. Use erasable markers to redefine territories as need…such as when you add new customers to the map.

4. A wall map can actually be a draw for walk in traffic. If your map shows where everything else in the neighborhood is, people will drop in to your store to find out
where other stores and services are located. Even better, let people stick a small colored sticker on the map to mark their spot…and gather intelligence from them about where your customers comes from.

5. Local wall maps are a great addition to the office decor. They make your employees feel a little more connected to the community and can also instill a sense of who the customer is and why they are there to serve the customer, right

Before printing a wall map, you will need to design the map. There are many great mapping software and services options available online.

A map on the wall motivates staff and keeps them organized. It connects you to your customers. Posting a map on the wall says, We are in business and ready to conquer. Just dont try putting up a map of the world…at least, not to start with.

The Dirty Truth About How To Mind Map

January 22nd, 2010

When it comes to the major proponents of how to mind map, there’s probably nobody more active or better known in making this type of thinking popular and prominent than the author and educational consultant, Tony Buzan. It’s not that he invented this technique, though he claims that he created its modern version. Making a visual map of the concepts and ideas contained in an argument or an explanation of information appears to have been used as far back as the third century of the Common Era. But there’s no doubt that Tony Buzan was the driving force in bringing the technique into use in the twentieth century.

Buzan stands on the shoulders of several others who developed earlier precursors of mind map methods. Allan M. Collins and M. Ross Quillian in particular completed research on “semantic networks,” exploring how learning, creativity and graphical thinking were related. But Buzan also credits the semantic theories of Alfred Korzybski as his inspiration for understanding how to create a mind map. These theories were given life by science fiction novelists such as Robert Heinlein and A.E. van Vogt, but it was Buzan who put them into popular form and made them accessible to the general public.

The Tony Buzan mind mapping technique involves taking a central word and arranging all the concepts or ideas related to that word in ways that radiate out from it. He claims that readers don’t naturally absorb a page of text by scanning it left-to-right, as all English books are currently written. Rather, says Buzan, they tend to scan the page in a non-linear way. So when he teaches how to mind map, he teaches people to use their non-linear right brain to visualize related concepts on a page, as spatial ideas, and then to group them together with similar colors or by relocating them to the same place on the page. This, according to Buzan, reveals relationships and themes that the person might not initially have thought of.

In 2006, Buzan released a mindmapping software program called “iMindMap, and he has published many books on memory, speed reading, and of course on creating maps of the mind itself. He also has a website called “Buzan World,” where he promotes his ideas. Over the years he has founded many organizations such as the Brain Foundation, the Brain Trust Charity, the World Memory Championships, and the World Championships of the Brain. But although he is well known for exploring all aspects of the mind, he is probably best known for his promotion and education on all aspects of how to mind map.

Mind Mapping: an Example How-to Guide

January 17th, 2010

Mind mapping is a breakthrough concept wherein you will use the properties of association to come up with a drawing, map, or illustration of the ideas lodged in your brain about a particular topic.

Sounds confusing? Actually, mind mapping is a lot easier than what you think. This is because this technique or concept follows the natural workings of the brain ? which associates one word with another word to have a clear picture of the overall idea.

For example, if you say technology, there are several things that will instantly come to your mind. This central theme can branch out to the Internet, gadgets, mobile devices, telecommunications ? the list is practically endless. Thus, mind mapping will give you more leeway when it comes to freedom of expression in the sense that one keyword is not just limited to one sub-topic, but it can branch out to several sub-topics. This will help you easily remember and understand the main concept which is represented by one word.

To have a deeper understanding of the process of mind mapping, take a look at the following example and how-to guide:

On a piece of paper, write down the central idea or the main theme of the topic that you want to tackle. Enclose it in a box or circle.

From this main word, what other words can you associate with it? Take the aforementioned example which is technology. How many branches of technology are there? From the circle of box that you have drawn in the middle of the paper, draw branches or curved arrows surrounding the main theme and connect them all together.

If you can think of other sub-topics under the branches of technology, place another batch of boxes or circles to represent these sub-topics.

Let all your ideas branch out until you are satisfied with the results and you have exhausted all the possibilities.

The resulting illustration will be the result of your mind mapping. Now, isn’t this easier than making copious and detailed notes about the branches of technology and all the other sub-topics under it.

You will surely remember this map by heart because you are the one who made it ? which is a plus factor, aside from the fact that visual maps are easier to remember than attempting to memorize pages of lists.

There are also mind mapping software available for you, since a lot of people find the process so useful and time-saving. No matter which method of mind mapping you choose, be it using a mind mapping software or through the traditional pen and paper ? the important thing is that you can enjoy the benefits of living up to your brain’s potential by making use of this ingenious mind mapping technique.
